L’î ’a vulé
Che succede dinto â cerevella assaie delicata ’e nu criaturo? E dinto ê ccape d’ ’a gente ’e nu Rione o ’e na Comunità, ’e na Gemeinschaft, ô mumento ca chiste se védono negato ’a na società, ’a na Gesellschaft, ’o deritto ’e s’esprìmere accussì comme èvano fatto sempe? E che addiventa, po, ’a democrazia aroppo ca chesta stessa gente è priva pure d’arapì sulamente ’a vocca? Cheste songo doie d’ ’e qquistione, pe mé cchiù necessarie, ca vulevo rappresentà cu chesta storia.
What happens in the very delicate mind of a child? What happens in the minds of the people, a neighbourhood or community - a Gemeinschaft – when a society – or Gesellschaft – denies their right to express themselves in the way they had always done? And what happens, then, to democracy once these same people are unable to even simply speak their minds? These are two of the issues, most pressing to me, that I intended to manifest through this story.
E la narrazione rivive in modo ancora più affascinante perché resa nella lingua del luogo in cui si svolge, scritta interamente nella lingua dei quartieri dove il degrado è all'ordine del giorno e in cui la speranza è la sola cosa che sopravvive. L'î ’a vulé (Lo devi volere) descrive la ricerca della felicità attraverso il linguaggio.
